The two most common instrumentation valves solve different problems, and each does the other's job badly.
Needle valve, regulation
A finely tapered stem advances over multiple turns, changing the flow passage gradually. That gives precise, repeatable throttling, for gauge isolation, sampling rates, calibration, and pressure equalization, plus positive metal-to-metal shut-off when seated. Gradual movement also avoids pressure surges that damage sensitive instruments.
Ball valve, isolation
A bored ball rotates 90° between fully open (near-zero pressure drop) and fully closed (positive shut-off). Fast, low-effort, reliable, but using it half-open for throttling erodes the seats and gives unstable control.
Rule of thumb
- Need to adjust flow → needle valve
- Need to stop flow → ball valve
- Need both on one line → needle valve for control plus ball valve for isolation
