Working principle
The lower connection forms the primary pressure-tight joint with the process line; the upper connection allows controlled rotation of the gauge body. Once the process joint is tight, the gauge turns independently to the desired dial position while sealing integrity is maintained throughout.

On a fixed threaded gauge connection they are one degree of freedom. The installer turns until the dial faces the operator, so final torque is set by where the dial happens to land, the joint ends up over-tightened past the seal point, or backed off short of it.
The swivel separates the two. Make the process connection up to its correct torque, then rotate the gauge 360° to any viewing angle without loading the threads. The same applies in reverse at replacement: the gauge comes off without disturbing a joint that is already sealed.
